On Monday, round about the time everyone was gearing up for the A level grading u-turn, Research England slipped out their funding allocations for the majority of the funding streams they manage.
We don’t get figures for the Strategic Priorities Fund (SPF) or the Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF), these will follow at a later date. So most providers will be slightly down on last year – though the research grant over all is slightly up – £1,744m in 2019-20 has risen to £1,776m in 2020-21.
Without further ado, here’s the figures for recurrent:
And for capital:
If you’re wondering, like I was, why RE run two capital allocations of a broadly similar size with similar names, here’s the difference.
- HEI Research Capital England is allocated in proportion to 2018-19 and 2019-20 QR fundin, and funding from “other selected sources” from 2017-18 and 2018-19. It is worth £101m next academic year, up from £96m this year.
- Higher Education Research Capital (HERC) England is allocated based on income from research councils, based on the last three years of data. It is worth £78m next academic year, down from £87m last year.
It’s all part of the Research Capital Investment Fund (RCIF).
