You will work at the heart of the University helping to take the public policy function from good to excellent. The role will involve a variety of activities including policy briefings, horizon scanning, meeting MPs, organizing VIP visits, as well maintaining databases, and writing regular updates to stakeholders.
The role is an ideal development role for anyone who has a strong interest in working in public affairs and public policy. No prior experience of the Higher Education sector is required nor is it expected that, long-term, you will see yourself working in the Higher Education sector.
You will be comfortable with rapidly changing work priorities, using your initiative, making judgements, defending them, giving advice with incomplete information, and working across the university with people of different seniority. You will get the support you need to develop your public policy skills and to give you the confidence necessary for the role.
Given the increasing public and political focus on universities, their public policy function is becoming increasingly important. You will report directly to the Head of Policy who reports directly to the Vice-Chancellor.
Now is an exciting time to join the University as well as to work in the Higher Education sector. The University is at the start of realizing an ambitious 2030 Vision and the sector has gone through, and is expecting more, politically-driven change. Whether it is debates around ‘low’ quality courses, universities’ civic role, free speech, fees, or Government’s R&D ambitions, there will be plenty to get your teeth into.
The role will be require you to be on site in Portsmouth on a regular basis as well as occasional travel to London. However, flexible working options, including remote working, for the time when you are not required at a particular location are possible.
