Pro-Vice Chancellor – Learning, Teaching and Student Success

Expires

28th February 2022

Sheffield Hallam is an ambitious university. We aspire to be a genuinely great university creating opportunity, leading social, economic and cultural change in our region, and establishing a model of what imaginative and forward-thinking universities can achieve.

The University has a simple aim-to transform lives, shaping futures for our students and the Sheffield City Region, creating knowledge which makes a real difference, and becoming a beacon for what a world-leading applied university can achieve.

We have put in place many of the building blocks for exceptional success: a coherent strategy based on compelling ideas in clear language, a set of inclusively-developed institutional values, a simple but flexible academic structure and a cogent, student-focused professional services structure.  We have learnt a good deal about ourselves and our students in our response to the global pandemic, which has seen the University respond with exceptional agility and flexibility in the most challenging circumstances.  We have stress-tested our strategy and set out an ambitious programme of change for the future, simplifying the university’s academic offer and embedding flexible operation.

At the same time we have seen evidence of the University’s progress : we were the Times and Sunday Times University of the Year for Teaching Quality in 2020; this year we are University of the year for Social Mobility and in 2021 we won the Times Higher award for Outstanding Enterprise University.  We have risen thirty places in the past four years in the Guardian league table. We have seen research income rise by 40% over the same period.  The University is amongst the best of modern universities for its graduate employment record.  We lead the national Civic University Network. We have established Sheffield Hallam as a sector leader in key areas: on widening participation, on civic engagement, on health and well-being and on thinking about universities and place.

We are now looking to recruit an exceptional leader to build on the progress we have made to help shape the transformation of our academic offer, to embed student success across the University and to lead innovation in learning and teaching. We are looking for a genuinely brilliant innovator.  This is a role will lead dynamic change in an organisation with expansive ambitions and a hunger for innovative solutions.  Already at the forefront of sector thinking in much of what we do – in our approach to organisation, in our achievements in widening participation, in our local and global partnerships, in our work with employers– we are looking to recruit a dynamic change agent who can work in flexible teams to shape the future of our University.

You will be joining a university that aims to excel in achieving outstanding outcomes for all, a university that thinks about quality and equality as inextricably linked, a university that secures the highest standards of learning, teaching and research. You will be joining leadership teams committed to their own development –to exemplars of creative and collaborative leadership.

Not only is this a fabulous job -it’s in a fabulous location, at the heart of one of the UK’s largest cities, and within a few minutes of some of the nation’s most spectacular landscapes. Woven into the fabric and culture of Sheffield and the surrounding area, the University is playing an increasingly vital role in the region – leading improvements in social mobility, quality of life and the economy through the impact of our students, research, and partnerships.

If you have vision, passion, creativity and determination to make a difference-we want to hear from you. This is a key appointment for us and it will be for you –so we’ll invest time with candidates to get to know them and to give them the chance to get to know us.
