The Role
The primary focus of this role is regulatory compliance, with the Director expected to take a ‘hands on’ role on compliance issues across the university.
This role is also central to managing and coordinating University of London’s response to policy and regulatory change. The Director will lead on tracking policy developments, advising the senior team on the implications, identifying potential opportunities and challenges for the University and will develop responses to policy consultations.
The Director will also lead the newly formed Governance, Policy and Compliance department which exists to support the good governance of the University, and which will bring together a range of existing roles into a new structure to enhance the university’s approach to compliance, policy and governance and strengthen the important links between these functions.
The Director of Governance, Policy and Compliance is one of three Director-level roles that report to the Pro Vice Chancellor (Governance and Partnerships), the others being the Director of Strategic Communication and Marketing and the Director of Development.
The day-to-day activities of the post-holder are wide-ranging and include statutory and regulatory compliance (including the Office for Students and the ICO); overseeing the running of the University’s governance arrangements; legal services; equality and inclusion; and support for student societies.
The post-holder will be a trusted advisor on policy developments, providing advice and guidance to senior leaders and acting as a sounding board on regulatory and compliance matters.
The postholder will establish and maintain key working relationships with senior staff from across the University (particularly those with responsibilities play a role in regulatory compliance such as quality assurance and data). The postholder will also need to develop good working relationships with some senior officers from across the University of London Federation.
Applications are welcomed from candidates with a demonstrable understanding of the policy and regulatory environment in which universities operate and a detailed understanding of current and future developments in higher education, particularly in respect to policy, regulation, and governance.
The successful candidate will possess strong leadership and interpersonal skills and be able to both foster excellent performance amongst colleagues and influence senior colleagues in a positive manner.
