Founded in 2011, Wonkhe is the home of the higher education debate, leading the national conversation about higher education policy and universities in the UK.
We supply critical intelligence and information services to the higher education sector through our daily email briefings, publish articles and analysis from within our team and a diverse range of sector voices on Wonkhe.com, and build connections across our community of higher education professionals through our public and private events. We also have a thriving community of students’ union subscribers, and we work with a wide range of partner organisations that share our goals and support our work.
We are a small, driven team working at a fast pace, that values autonomy, creativity and quality. Our readers trust the analysis and information we provide and use it to inform their thinking and professional lives in higher education. We all have a big commitment to the success of universities, and we expect everyone in the team to share that goal.
We are recruiting for an Operations Coordinator, to work alongside our founder and Editor in Chief, across a wide range of duties aimed at powering a small business and team, who all share a passion for UK higher education.
An all-round fixer and organiser, you’ll get a kick from getting things done and having a very wide range of responsibilities, working without close supervision. You’ll have a confident communication style across a range of mediums and a calm, unflappable demeanour. Above all, you’ll have a willingness to hustle and to pull your sleeves up to do what’s needed to make everything we do at Wonkhe happen.
The role is fully remote, with occasional travel to London and elsewhere in the UK for team meetings and events. We can also offer flexible terms to suit your desired working patterns.
What you can expect from the role:
- You’ll be a key link between the team and our community of readers, speakers, authors, partners and stakeholders of different stripes, ensuring we have excellent, friendly and speedy customer service, primarily on email. You’ll be troubleshooting a range of issues from editorial to technical, and going the extra mile for our hugely valued community, making sure that their interactions with Wonkhe are nothing short of excellent.
- Our subscription services are central to our business, and you’ll be ensuring that we keep the paperwork flowing from invoices to contracts and making sure our internal tracking systems are maintained. You’ll ensure that subscribers are happy, trials of our service are delivered, contracts are renewed, and readers know how to access the services available to them.
- You’ll be supporting our events from start to finish, including venue bookings, speaker briefings, delegate communication, and marketing – you’ll be involved in every step of the process. Our events span one-day conferences to online roundtables and private dinners – and everything in between.
- Our partnerships are a big part of our work, and support a range of activities of events, research and editorial work. You’ll work with the team to make sure that deadlines are met, issues are dealt with as well as looking for opportunities to go the extra mile for our partners.
- We’re undertaking a process of digital transformation, a project that spans everything that the business does. You will be working on educating our subscribers about our new systems and assisting with the migration, and supporting the team as we adopt new technology and ways of doing things.
Who we are looking for:
- An ambitious self-starter with a drive to succeed and a proactive approach.
- Developed written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to process large amounts of information quickly, and manipulate spreadsheets.
- Strong problem-solving skills, ability to troubleshoot issues and know when to escalate.
- Ability to organise and manage a diverse workload, prioritise tasks, and reliably produce high-quality work to tight deadlines.
- Ability to follow established processes and spot ways to improve them.
- Comfortable with working remotely and flexibly without close supervision.
- Strong attention to detail and an ability to get it right the first time.
- Comfortable working across a wide range of digital tools and able to learn new ones quickly as the need arises.
- An open and collaborative approach to facilitate the smooth running of a small team.
- An interest in higher education and experience of working in or with universities would be desirable.
