Main Purpose of the role
- Be an active member of the Union’s Senior Leadership Team, responsible for developing & delivering on the Union’s strategy, operating plans, budgets and KPIs
- Support the Union to deliver its core function of representing students by enabling students to be active members of the Brookes community
- Support the elected officers to deliver high-impact and evidence-lead campaigns and activities
- Support the continuous improvement of the Union’s services, culture and performance
Key Responsibilities
- Responsible for developing and delivering the Union’s organisational strategy, including setting and monitoring progress towards ambitious KPIs
- Supporting the CEO to report regularly to the Board of Trustees, producing and presenting reports upon request
- Responsible for building strong and sustainable relationships internally and externally which support the Union in achieving its KPIs and objectives
- Provide effective and comprehensive line management to your team including objective setting, personal and professional development, appraisals, performance management and wellbeing/pastoral support
- Responsible for achieving stretching income targets, generated from a diverse funding mix including media sales, commercial partnerships, grants and sponsorship
- Lead on the Union’s Health & Safety responsibilities including supporting the Health & Safety sub-committee of the trustee board
- Responsible for delivering the Union’s Societies function including ensuring that strategic aims and targets are met
- Ensure that the Union’s Societies are properly governed, including that rules relating to financial management, governance and bye-laws are met
- Responsible for delivering the Union’s events and on-site activity function including ensuring that any events meet Health & Safety, Prevent and any other regulatory requirements
- Ensure that the Union’s facilities are properly managed, including building strong relationships with the Universities’ estates and facilities teams
- Identifying strategic community partnerships across the University & locally and working to create a cohesive student experience by identifying and delivering on mutually beneficial projects
- Lead on and support other teams to deliver the Union’s celebratory events including Fresher’s Fair, Union awards ceremonies,
- Elections/Results Nights and Teaching Awards and similar. Support the VP Societies and Employability in any development work related to societies or other communities on campus
- Lead on the Union’s reward, recognition and employability strategy, ensuring that members are able to identify the benefits of engaging in the Union

General Terms
- Lead on, contribute to, or take part in occasional organisation-wide events and activities including Freshers Fair, Awards Ceremonies, Open Days, elections, Officer Campaigns and organisational change
projects or similar - Ensure and role-model a positive organisational culture at all times, living by the Union’s values
- Minimise environmental impact by attending to your duties in a resource efficient manner, and actively support the delivery of the SU’s Environmental Policy in the performance of your role
- Any other duties commensurate with the role, as required
- Support the elected Officers to deliver on their manifesto pledges or other ideas, campaigns and lobbying using whatever means available to you
- Continually streamline services using technology and digital solutions
- Lead on the development of online content related to your area of work including social media and website content
Person Specification
Experience/Knowledge/Understanding
Essential:
- Experience of working within, or an understanding of students’ unions or other similar membership organisations
- Experience of working within, or an understanding of the principles of effective senior leadership, including demonstrable direct line-management experience
- Experience of, or an interest in community development theory and practice
- Experience of Health & Safety compliance and events planning/delivery
- Experience, or understanding of organisational planning and delivery including financial, strategic and operational planning
Desirable:
- Experience, or understanding of delivering to KPIs in an impact-lead environment
- Tangible experience of leading successful community-focussed campaigns, events and/or projects, which resulted in success

Qualifications/Training
Essential:
- Relevant Health & Safety qualification (eg NEBOSH, IOSH or similar) or equivalent experience
Desirable:
- Other relevant professional qualification(s) (H&S, Project Planning, First Aid, Fire Safety etc)
