Founded in 1906, The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama (Central) is a globally renowned institution of the theatrical and performing arts. An independent federal member of the University of London, we inspire, educate and train the performers, practitioners and change-makers of tomorrow to shape the future of theatre and the performing arts. Our areas of specialism cover performance (acting, voice, movement), creative, design and production (theatre practice), and drama and applied theatre.
Central is administered by the Governing Body, made up of external Independent Governors and elected representation from the staff and student body, who are responsible for overseeing the School’s activities, shaping its future direction, and ensuring it is governed and managed effectively. The Governing Body are committed to best practice in all aspects of corporate governance and conducts business in accordance with the principles of public life.
Central is seeking a Director of Governance who will support the Governors and the Executive Team to deliver a culture of excellence, governance and compliance with regulatory bodies. Reporting directly to the Chair of the Board and the Chief Financial Officer, the Director of Governance is a crucial designated senior role that encompasses the functions of both Clerk to Governors and Company Secretary. The role offers the opportunity to work at the heart of Central and ensures compliance with Higher Education frameworks and regulations; encourages and fosters strong participation from Governors and their relationship with Central; and continue to streamline governance processes across the organisation. This role is essential to ensuring that Central remains a sectoral leader in specialist dramatic arts education by maintaining thorough compliance, careful record keeping, and timely governance reports and meetings. The Director of Governance will keep the Board, Committees and Executive Team up to date on all matters of governance, advising and provide challenge when required.
The new Director of Governance will need to be a governance expert with experience working in a highly regulated environment and a strong understanding of charity law and Higher Education governance. They must be an adept self-starter with experience of environment scanning and a proactive approach toward gathering and sharing relevant information with Governors and Executive Team. They will need to have exceptional communication and organisational skills and the ability to be discrete and diplomatic when handling sensitive information and decisions. The Director of Governance should bring a strategic mindset and will be someone who can recognise where improvement is needed and implement change in an effective and innovative manner. Candidates should have a passion for the work that Central does, share their values and have a commitment to their mission.
There is scope for this role to be appointed on either a full-time or part-time basis and we welcome interest from candidates interested in either arrangement.
