About Us

We are recruiting for two Senior Policy Advisers within the Research Funding team in Research England. The roles will sit within the wider research directorate of Research England. The directorate is responsible for Research England’s policy development, evaluation and implementation aimed at maximising the excellence and impact of research in universities in England.

 

Purpose

These roles will lead and/or support work on Research England’s broad research funding portfolio. The roles will involve working with colleagues and independently to develop and/or implement RE policy with considerable levels of engagement with colleagues across UKRI and government, universities and other external organisations. You will be well-organised and self-motivated, ideally with a background in higher education, research or policy. You will have analytical experience working with data to make judgements and inform decisions. Capable of working to your own initiative, you will contribute substantially to the development and delivery of projects. You will have an analytical approach and be a confident communicator with people at all levels.

 

Main outputs and activities

You will lead and support work across Research England’s research funding interests, examples include:

• Leading on areas within RE’s strategic institutional funding review (such as engagement with the HE sector, liaison with analysis teams, managing external commissions, and funding transparency) and contributing to other areas of the review such as overall programme management and delivery.

• Leading policy development, delivery and evaluation of RE research funding streams; including managing funding reviews and award arrangements, monitoring, key liaison with the sector and government, and managing funding processes with finance colleagues.

• Contributing to comprehensive spending review commissions and the development of key evidence of the impacts and benefits of RE funding.

• Developing and leading relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including representing RE at external events.

• Delegating tasks to colleagues and supporting junior staff as required.

• Supporting wider areas of policy within the team as they arise

 

Shortlisting Criteria

• Graduate level qualifications or equivalent experience

• Experience of working in higher education, or research, or of developing and implementing policy

• Ability to interpret data and show attention to detail, understand new issues and contribute to the policy development process by making appropriate recommendations

• A methodical approach with a proven ability to work in and lead project teams/policy areas and a knowledge of project management tools

• Ability to manage own workload, resolve competing demands and cope with changing priorities in a flexible and proactive way

• Ability to appropriately tailor written and oral communications in style and content according to audience

• Ability to represent the views of the Council to external stakeholders and to negotiate with and influence stakeholders
