Main purpose of the role
This role plays a pivotal role in shaping, positioning and driving our policy and engagement activities with members and funders across all aspects of our R&I portfolio. This ranges from analysis of the incentives for the private sector to innovate, to public funding for research and development and attracting and attracting international investment into the UK’s research system.

Responsibilities
• Identify, set and deliver policy priorities in R&I, informed through engagement with members, funders and key stakeholders.
• Design and programme manage the delivery of our R&I projects. In 2024, NCUB will undertake a major project on the role of prioritisation in industrial policy.
• Identify and take responsibility for writing and preparing NCUB submissions to external consultations in the areas of research and innovation.
• Lead on the commissioning, and management of policy analysis on R&I by external consultants.
• Identify and take ownership for identifying opportunities to disseminate and promote outputs from the research and innovation portfolio through different communications channels and media, including giving presentations, producing press releases and blogs, and use of social media.
• Develop effective working relations with external stakeholders, including representing NCUB in policy and engagement meetings, providing feedback to colleagues to enhance organisational intelligence and enhancing NCUB’s impact and influence.
• Work effectively with colleagues, including task management responsibilities within projects. Make a positive and proactive contribution to the culture and ethos in the organisation by leading by example.
• To undertake any other duties commensurate with the role.
Essential skills and experience
• Educated to degree level or equivalent.
• Experience of policy development and implementation in areas related to research and innovation.
• Strong analytical skills including the ability to identify priorities, lead new policy thinking and develop effective policy recommendations using both qualitative and quantitative sources of evidence.
• Strong organisational and project management experience, including the ability to work across a wide range of policy areas.
• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to produce high quality outputs for a range of audiences and communicate complex issues in an accessible way.
• Ability to develop strong and influential networks and to develop effective partnerships with external stakeholders.
Desirable skills and experience
• Experience of working for a membership organisation.
• A good understanding of university-business collaboration.
