June 2, 2015
Presented by: Dr Sam Hopkins and Dr Mary Dickinson
Learning the skills of mentoring can help you in your current role and also in the future. Whether you plan to stay in academia or not you can use the tools you gain through mentoring in many interactions with peers, people you manage or supervise and even people who manage you.
In this session you will be introduced to the basics of mentoring. We will discuss the benefits for both the mentor and mentee before going into the practicalities of being a good mentor. During the session we will explore and practice some active listening techniques and go through a few of the basic coaching models. We will spend some time discussing resilience and how to mentorto build capacity both in oneself and in others. Specifically we will look at empowering mentor and mentee self-regulation, self-efficacy and self-esteem. This will be an active workshop where participants will be expected to engage with the tools and techniques being discussed.
